As MITA visits high schools we find that some of the classes have the ability to purchase tools, and others have a more limited budget. That was the case at San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino. When we first did a workshop for construction teacher Steven DeLaPortilla, he had borrowed trowels and joiners from teacher Andrew Espinoza at Cajon High School. We were glad to see them joining forces, but for a long-term ability to teach the basics of masonry in the classroom when MITA is not there to do a workshop, having their own tools was essential. We reached out to the Home Depot closest to the school site and their team jumped right in. Erica was a pleasure to work with to make the tools available through a donation. MITA acted as the intermediary using our non-profit status to accept the gift, and in turn offer it to San G for their construction class. Members of the Home Depot team joined the class when the tools were dropped off and participated with the students in the workshop. We want to give Home Depot a big thank you! Now masonry has a place at San G with Mr. DeLaPortilla!
