MITA was delighted to visit the construction class of Instructor Walter Scott to share with his students the trade of masonry. Journeyman Mason, Steve Chavez, agreed to volunteer his time and talents to do a presentation. The presentation went from one class to a total of four! Each group of students were able to observe different aspects of a course of block for a wall. They learned how to mix mortar by hand, how to plumb the first level to ensure it would be perfect for the future courses, how to distribute the lime from the trowel to the block, and how to correctly line up and lay the block. Well over 100 students participated throughout the day, most never even knowing what masonry was until the demo. A big thank you to Steve for volunteering. MITA would like to do more of these events at area high schools. We are currently developing a speakers bureau to help us outreach throughout the six counties we serve: Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Orange and Los Angeles.
