Working with two High School teachers (Walter Scott and Andrew Wahe) interested in adding masonry to their curriculum, MITA developed a new “Block Seminars” program. In the program MITA will conduct a masonry seminar series consisting of 4 sessions throughout the school year. These sessions will introduce students to the craft of masonry, including providing a career pathway for them through a 3.5 year apprenticeship. Hands-on training sessions by an experienced apprenticeship instructor will include how to mix and maintain mortar safely and efficiently, how to use a trowel, and how to lay block in multiple contexts and forms. We are currently offering the seminars at Tahquitz High School in Hemet and Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley.
